Kia ora, my name is Hauiti; I hail from Tuwharetoa, in the Tauponuiatia region
I learnt a few string figures (the usual figures like the diamond series) when I was a kid growing up in Taupo and in Tokaanu with my grandparents who lived on Hirangi Road. It wasn't until I was older that I learnt a lot more figures along with their names and associated stories. It was then that I learnt that the "One of diamonds" was in fact Wahine, and the two of diamonds was mata and the three of diamonds was Parori - and the ten of diamonds was takapau - not just any takapau but takapau rangi & takapau nuku.
There are a host of figures - not just the ones illustrated in Andersen's or Patterson's books - but many others, with stories, whakapapa, and in some cases karakia
Many years later I find myself at the cross roads where I would like to help revive the art - yes, it is an art that can potentially help Maori learn about some of the stories that add to their identity. So, take a journey with me as i describe some of the figures I know
Na reira e aku nui e aku rahi - tenei taku e mihi atu ra ki a koutou!
Naaku noa ra
